I built Nielix myself, so I have an interest in your choice. The details about Emby were taken from the vendor's own pages on the date above and may be wrong or out of date, because prices and terms change. Always check with the vendor before you choose. All trademarks belong to their owners. Nielix is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.
Stay with Emby if ...
- You want apps for many devices. Emby lists apps for, among others, Android, Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, LG, Samsung, Roku, Xbox, PlayStation, iOS, Windows, Linux, macOS and web.
- You want to record live TV with your own tuner. Emby says live TV and DVR need Emby Premiere, and names, among others, HDHomeRun, Hauppauge and M3U sources. Nielix has no built-in support for TV tuners.
- You want to buy a licence once. Emby Premiere is available as monthly, yearly and one-time payment. Nielix Premium is a subscription per server.
- You want voice control. Emby lists smart home with Amazon Echo and Google Home as a Premiere feature. The Nielix documentation does not mention Alexa or Google Home.
- You want to use Emby in the car. Emby lists CarPlay and Android Auto as a Premiere feature. The Nielix documentation does not mention them.
- You want to extend it with plugins. Emby lists plugins. Nielix has no code plugins.
- You want more hardware transcoding methods. Emby lists NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, AMD AMF, DXVA and VA-API on the platforms where they exist. With Nielix only VAAPI has been tested.
Nielix may fit better if ...
- You want one price per server: Premium is €5.49 per month or €54 per year per server, VAT included. Premium covers the household, with all users, devices and apps on the server. Emby says its Premiere licences are for one household and carry a limit of 30 devices.
- You want hardware transcoding without a paid plan. Emby lists it as a Premiere feature. In Nielix, hardware transcoding is not among the Premium features. See the limitation under where Nielix is weaker.
- You want your own TV channels built from your own series and films, with a TV guide and reminders, and child profiles with an age limit, time per day and bedtime.
- You want a Home Assistant integration, MQTT, webhooks and messages and speech to the TV screens in the house.
- You want to keep your Jellyfin apps. Nielix has a compatibility layer for Jellyfin clients, off by default. It does not support live TV, playlists, collections, SyncPlay, plugins and remote control.
Where Nielix is weaker
- Nielix is new and built by one person. There is no large user base and not many guides yet.
- There are fewer apps. The web player works today on devices with a modern browser, and the Android TV app has been sent to Google Play and is awaiting review. There is no app from Nielix for iPhone, Apple TV or Roku.
- The source code is closed, and there are no code plugins.
- Nielix has no built-in support for TV tuners.
- Hardware transcoding has so far only been tested with VAAPI (Intel J4125). Intel QSV and NVIDIA NVENC have not been tested on real hardware, and the ffmpeg in the image has no NVENC.

Your files are on your own drives, and you can point Nielix at them. The server mounts the folders read-only and reads folder and file names plus .nfo files and images next to the files.
