Plex alternative: Nielix or Plex?
Looking for an alternative to Plex? First, when you should stay with Plex, and then when Nielix fits better.

I built Nielix myself, so I have an interest in your choice. The details about Plex were taken from the vendor's own pages on the date above and may be wrong or out of date, because prices and terms change. Always check with the vendor before you choose. All trademarks belong to their owners. Nielix is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.
Stay with Plex if ...
- You want apps for many kinds of devices. Plex lists apps for, among others, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, Google TV, Roku, smart TVs from LG, Samsung, VIDAA, Vizio and Hisense, Android, iOS, PlayStation and Xbox. Nielix has a web app and an Android TV app that has been sent to Google Play and is awaiting review.
- You want to watch live TV from a tuner and an antenna in your media server. Plex says live viewing is free and that recording (DVR) needs Plex Pass. Nielix has no built-in support for TV tuners.
- You want Plex's free, ad-supported films, series and live TV next to your own library. Plex lists it on their site. Nielix contains no content.
- You want to use Plexamp as a music player. Plex lists it as a separate app.
- You already have a Plex Pass and it covers what you use. Then there is no reason to switch on my account.
Nielix may fit better if ...
- You do not want an account with a third party to get started. Plex's quick start guide asks you to sign in or create a new Plex account on first setup. The Nielix server works without an account with me and without internet for everything on your own drives.
- You do not want to pay for remote streaming. Plex says it needs Plex Pass or a Remote Watch Pass. In Nielix, remote access is not among the Premium features. It goes through Tailscale or Cloudflare Tunnel, where you hold the account yourself, and it is off by default.
- You want one price per server: Premium is €5.49 per month or €54 per year per server, VAT included. It covers all users, devices and apps on the server. The base server is free with up to two user accounts.
- You want your own TV channels built from your own series and films, with a TV guide and reminders, child profiles with time per day and bedtime, and Home Assistant, MQTT and webhooks.
- You want hardware transcoding without a paid plan. Plex says it needs Plex Pass, with a few specific devices excepted. In Nielix, hardware transcoding is not among the Premium features. See the limitation under where Nielix is weaker.
Where Nielix is weaker
- Nielix is new and built by one person. There is no large user base and not many guides yet.
- There are fewer apps. The web player works today on devices with a modern browser, and the Android TV app has been sent to Google Play and is awaiting review. There is no app from Nielix for iPhone, Apple TV or Roku.
- The source code is closed, and there are no code plugins.
- Nielix has no built-in support for TV tuners.
- Hardware transcoding has so far only been tested with VAAPI (Intel J4125). Intel QSV and NVIDIA NVENC have not been tested on real hardware, and the ffmpeg in the image has no NVENC.

Questions and answers
Is Nielix an alternative to Plex?
Yes, if you want to run your own media server for your own films and series. Nielix is younger than Plex and has fewer apps. The lists above say when Plex is the right choice. If you are unsure, you can try Nielix next to your Plex server, because Nielix does not change your files.
Can I move my library from Plex?
Your files are on your own drives, and you can point Nielix at them. The server mounts the folders read-only and reads folder and file names, for example Film/Title (2022)/Title (2022).mkv and Series/Season 01/Series S01E01.mkv, plus .nfo files and images next to the files. The Nielix documentation describes no import of the Plex database, so expect to redo watch status and your own edits.
Does Nielix need an account, like Plex?
No. The Nielix server works without an account with me and without internet for everything on your own drives. You only need an account on nielix.net if you want to buy Premium. According to Plex's quick start guide (seen 2 November 2026), Plex asks you to sign in or create a Plex account on first setup.
What does Nielix cost compared with Plex Pass?
Nielix is free with up to two user accounts. Premium is €5.49 per month or €54 per year per server, VAT included. Plex Pass is available as a monthly subscription, a yearly subscription and a one-time payment. See Plex's own page for the current price.
Can I use Plex apps with a Nielix server?
No. Nielix has a layer for Jellyfin clients, off by default, but not for Plex apps. You use the Nielix web app and the Android TV app, which has been sent to Google Play and is awaiting review.
What can Plex do that Nielix cannot?
Plex lists apps for more kinds of devices, live TV from a tuner and antenna with DVR, free ad-supported streaming and the music app Plexamp. Nielix has none of these. See the table above and the sources at Plex.
